Steven Soderbergh, who hasn’t directed a movie since 2013, might be coming back to feature filmmaking. Or not.
A flurry of reports from Hollywood late Feb. 3 surfaced about Soderbergh possibly returning to make a heist movie with his Magic Mike and Side Effects star Channing Tatum. Variety started it, reporting the project as Hillbilly Heist and claiming that Matt Damon was also attached. However, Deadline then reported that the name of the movie is Logan Lucky and that Michael Shannon is attached, not Damon.
The story took another twist when Soderbergh resurfaced on Twitter to call the Variety story “wrong.” He also wrote that “all will be revealed” when he gives an exclusive interview with a magazine. “To be clear: Facts are SO twentieth century,” he added. His latest post featured a picture of a monkey.
Later, the Hollywood Reporter reported that it could not confirm Shannon’s involvement. THR also reported that it is not clear if Soderbergh plans on directing or just producing.
The producers on the new movie are Mark Johnson and Gregory Jacobs, with Glen Basner handling foreign sales.
Since helming 2013’s Side Effects, Soderbergh has directed HBO’s Behind the Candelabra and every single episode of Cinemax’s The Knick. He’s also an Oscar winner for directing 2000’s Traffic.
