Vin Diesel confirmed on Instagram Feb. 2 that the Fast & Furious franchise will hit 10 films. He posted the release dates for Furious 9 and 10.
It was already confirmed that Furious 8 will hit theaters on April 14, 2017, but Diesel’s Instagram post was the first confirmation we’ve had of two more films. The actor confirmed that Universal has scheduled the ninth film for April 19, 2019 and the 10th movie for April 2, 2021.
The eighth film will be directed by Straight Outta Compton’s F. Gary Gray. Jason Statham said that he was invited to return to the new film.
It’s easy to see why Universal wants to take the Furious series to a 10th film. The series started with 2001’s The Fast And The Furious and the most recent film in the series, 2015’s Furious 7 blazed past $1.5 billion worldwide. Furious 7’s success was partly fueled by good reviews and audiences wanting to see how the film worked in the late Paul Walker.
