It’s no secret Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, gave their kids Willow and Jaden Smith a lot of room to become independent thinkers and the actor is now joking about regretting it.

Smith spoke to BBC Radio 1Xtra on Feb. 9, when he joked they might have gone overboard with their hands-off approach to parenting.

“I think it may have been a mistake," he laughed. "I think we may have gone too far."

Smith specifically discussed his fears for Jaden, who has compared himself to Galileo in the past, and was recently named the face of Louis Vuitton’s womenswear.

“Jaden is 100% fearless, he will do anything," he said. "So as a parent it's scary, it's really terrifying – but he is completely willing to live and die by his own artistic decisions and he just doesn't concern himself with what people think."

However, he did say as parents they “encourage” Jaden’s artistic expression. He did admit balancing boundaries with encouraging his artistic expression is a “really difficult issue in our house."
