The Walt Disney Animation Studios is in the midst of another creative rebirth and Zootopia kept it going with the studio's largest three-day opening ever. It did even better than 2013’s Frozen.
Zootopia, which features the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman, opened to $73.7 million in North America. It has also been out in 45 other territories, grossing $158.8 million. The film’s international total is now up to $232.5 million, according to Rentrak estimates.
The opening beat the record set by Frozen in November 2013, when the film opened to $67.4 million. Unlike Frozen though, Zootopia hit theaters during a lean month and a weekend without a holiday.
Zootopia was directed by rich Moore (Wreck-It Ralph) and Byron Howard (Tangled). The film has earned critical acclaim thanks to its message against stereotyping others. It has clearly connected with audiences, even though Disney did a remarkable job in keeping the general plot of the film a secret. Many of the trailers focused on introducing the audience to the world of Zootopia and highlighted the sloth DMV scene. Audiences clearly wanted to visit that world.
Gerard Butler’s London Has Fallen did much better than his Gods of Egypt, opening to $21.7 million. That’s a drop from 2013’s Olympus Has Fallen, which opened to $30.3 million.
In its first weekend outside of the No. 1 slot, Deadpool took in $16.4 million. It’s now up to $311.2 million domestically.
Tina Fey’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot started with $7.6 million. Gods of Egypt rounded out the top five with just $5 million.
