Eddie Izzard completed an insane feat on March 20, by running 27 marathons in 27 days for the Sport Relief marathons challenge.
Sport Relief is calling him the 'Marathon Man.' The 54-year-old British comedian took part in the run, in honor of former South African President Nelson Mandela. The 27 marathons in 27 days is to represent every year Mandela was imprisoned before becoming president.
Izzard finished a double marathon in Johannesburg, marking to end the charity challenge. The last 26.2 mile run concluded at the feet of Mandela’s famous statue.
On the fifth day, Izzard had to take an unscheduled rest day, forcing him to complete two marathons on the final day. In total, the Sport Relief route was 707 miles. Izzard battled with dehydration, heat exhaustion and sunstroke throughout the challenge, according to BBC.
Izzard raised over $1 million for his participation and Sport Relief raised more than $82 million all together.
Izzard’s success came after he attempted a similar challenge in 2012 but had to call it off for health reasons.
"It's been the hardest thing I've ever done. Thank you to everyone who has donated [and] don't do this at home," said Izzard to BBC reporters after he completed the last stretch.
