Sony’s Columbia Pictures and Annapurna Pictures released the first photo from Sausage Party, a raunchy R-rated animated comedy from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, today.
The photo features four anthropomorphic foods looking in amazement. The voice cast includes Rogen, Paul Rudd, Kristen Wiig, Nick Kroll, Jonah Hill and other Rogen buddies. It was directed by Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens) and Greg Tiernan (Thomas & Friends).
Rogen wrote the script for Sausage Party with Goldberg, Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir. Hill gets a “story by” credit with Goldberg and Rogen. Vernon, Rogen and Goldberg produced with Annapurna's Megan Ellison. Alan Menken did the music.
SXSW in Austin, Texas will host a “work-in-progress” screening on March 14, long before the film’s Aug. 12 release date. Rogen will also be in Austin for a screening of his AMC series Preacher.
As Cartoon Brew notes, it is very rare for an R-rated animated film to get a wide release in the U.S. In fact, there hasn’t been one since 2007’s Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters flopped. (Last year’s Anomalisa, which was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, never earned a wide release from Paramount.)
