Margot Robbie has signed on for another big role. This time, she will be playing Tonya Harding, the controversial ice skater whose rivalry with Nancy Kerrigan dominated the news in the mid ‘90s.
The project is currently titled I, Tonya and is being developed at Clubhouse Pictures. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robbie is also going to produce under her LuckyChap Entertainment.
The script will be written by Steven Rogers (Kate & Leopold, Love The Coopers), reports Entertainment Weekly.
Harding remains one of the most controversial figures in American sports thanks to the events leading up to the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. Just prior to the games, Kerrigan was hit just above the knee and the attack was linked to Harding’s former husband and her bodyguard. Harding was later banned from U.S. Figure Skating and lost her 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championship title.
Robbie has seen her career skyrocket since The Wolf of Wall Street and stars in three movies this year. Whisky Tango Foxtrot is currently in theaters and she will next be seen in The Legend of Tarzan. She’s also in Suicide Squad.
