Although it’s been awhile since we’ve heard about Tina Fey’s plans for a Mean Girls musical, Fey said this week that the project is still in the works.

While taking part in a New York Times panel in New York on March 2, Fey said that she, composer Jeff Richmond and lyricist Nell Benjamin “have been working on it,” reports The Huffington Post.

New York Times culture reporter Melena Ryzik asked Fey if it was still happening. “Yes, yes,” Fey said, later adding that it is “years away” from coming to fruition.

Fey and Richmond, her husband, have been working on the project for years already. In October 2015, Benjamin told Playbill that they are still writing the second act. It’s hard for Fey to find time to work on it, since she has other projects, including Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

“We're all theatre kids who found our sense of belonging when we found theatre, so we've made it very clear that we don't want to make it — we don't want to just [transplant] the movie to a stage,” Benjamin told Playbill. “We want to make it a love letter to musicals in particular.”

Fey wrote the original 2004 film, which was based on the novel by Rosalind Wiseman. The film starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert. It was “fetch.”

In the meantime, you can check out Fey in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot this weekend.
