OwlCrate is a book subscription service that sends a hardcover Young Adult book along with 3-5 book related items to, as they put it, “help you get your nerd on.” Every month’s box is based on a new theme and costs $29.99 plus $6.99 shipping. This month’s Writer’s Block box was full of items revolving around writing and censorship. I absolutely loved it and I’m here to show you what kind of goodies you can expect from this company, as well as give you a very useful coupon code good until April 20, 2016. More on that later.

The box’s outer packaging is at the top of this article. As you can see, it’s very cute and creative and we haven’t even gotten to the goodies yet. Inside, everything was packed safely in crinkly, recyclable shredded cardboard. I like that they ship in a bio-degradable material. They also include a card listing all the items in the box explaining how they fit the theme, which is handy.

The main perk in each box is the hardcover YA book. They always choose a book that’s been released within the last 45 days, so there’s not much chance of you already owning it. This month’s book was The Serpent King. It’s written by Jeff Zentner, a guitarist who has recorded with Iggy Pop, Nick Cave and Debbie Harry. How cool is that? It looks to be a small town coming-of-age story. I can’t wait to read it. You can find the book on Amazon here.

Related to the book, there was a letter from the author exclusively for OwlCrate subscribers, as well as an art print postcard with a quote from the book.

Next we get into the bookish treats. The most exciting ones for me were the banned books socks from Out of Print and the book of writing prompts called 642 Tiny Things to Write About. Both brought out my inner geek. At the time of this writing, I am currently wearing the socks, which are soft and comfortable. One is covered in the names of banned books and the other has the names censored. It’s an important topic covered in a cute manner.

The last two items in the box were a set of pinback buttons created exclusively for OwlCrate by Bookworm Boutique and a quill-shaped pen by Kikkerland. The pen writes really smoothly, but I will probably only use it at home. The buttons, however, I immediately attached to my purse to broadcast my love of reading to the world.

I thought this box covered its theme in a creative way and the items are certainly worth the price I paid. I will get use out of most everything they sent. Best of all, it made my reader’s heart happy and isn’t that what it’s all about?

If you sign up for OwlCrate now, you should be just in time to get April’s Dystopia box. I’m all kinds of excited for that one. To get 10 percent off your first box, use the code CCAFE10 at checkout.  The code is available until April 20. Go ahead and make your inner reader happy!
