More than two decades after Kurt Cobain was found dead in his home with a gunshot wound from an apparent suicide, Seattle police have released images of the gun they say he used.
For years the weapon was rumored to have been destroyed, but as TMZ reported, a court order has now made it available for the public to see.
The Associated Press noted that the images released on March 16 by authorities show cold case Detective Mike Ciesynski holding Cobain’s shotgun. The pictures were originally taken over the summer and uploaded to the case file earlier this month.
Cobain first rose to fame in 1991 as the lead singer of the band Nirvana and was found dead in 1994. He was married to Hole frontwoman Courtney Love, with whom he shared a daughter, Frances Bean, with. A suicide note to his fans was found near his body.
While there have been many conspiracies theories over the years that the 27-year-old was murdered, Ciesynski said that he has not found any new evidence to conclude that Cobain’s death was anything other than a suicide.
