Seth Rogen and his frequent creative partner Evan Goldberg are going to try to make a movie out of Where’s Waldo? for MGM.
The film will be live-action and has Waldo traveling throughout space and time, finding himself in unique scenes. The books were illustrated by Martin Handford and published by Classic Media, beginning in 1987. Waldo is known as Wally outside the U.S. and Canada.
Rogen and Goldberg’s involvement was first reported by The Tracking Board on March 7. Deadline reported today that Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir were picked to write a new script. It’s still not clear if Goldberg and Rogen will have any other involvement beyond producing.
Hollywood has been trying to bring Waldo to the screen for years. It was set up at Paramount, then Universal and is now at MGM. With over 55 million copies of the books sold worldwide, it’s easy to see why studios are interested in bringing the character to life. A short-lived animated series was produced in the early ‘90s.
Rogen and Goldberg have several projects in the works and directed The Interview and This Is The End together. They also produced the upcoming R-rated animated comedy Sausage Party.
