Back when Sony still had major ambitions for the Amazing Spider-Man franchise, the studio planned to make a Venom spin-off. Those plans were put on hold when the deal to bring Spidey to the Marvel cinematic universe happened, but now it looks like Sony is putting Venom back on track.
On March 4, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that writer Dante Harper was hired to write the screenplay. Harper worked on Tom Cruise’s already-cult sci-fi movie Edge of Tomorrow.
However, Sony is considering this move apart from the Tom Holland Spider-Man projects that are being produced with Marvel Studios. That means Sony could conceivably cast another Peter Parker for the Venom movie(s).
Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, who have been on Sony’s Spider-Man movies since they started, will produce the Venom movie.
Back in 2013, prior to the disappointing release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony put together a writing team for Venom and The Sinister Six. However, none of those writers - who included Drew Goddard and Alex Kurtzman - are now on the Venom project.
Venom was created in 1988 and has been a major character in the Spider-Man universe ever since. The character is technically an alien symbiote that takes over a human, giving the victim incredible powers.
The character was played by Topher Grace in Spider-Man 3.
