This week’s new dramas and action films are sprinkled with humor, finding laughter in somewhat serious situations.  A prequel to a classic fairy tale is also hitting the big screen this weekend.

Sisters butt heads in The Huntsman: Winter's War.  The evil Queen Ravenna destroys her sister Freya’s heart by killing her baby.  As a result of her loss, Freya forms an army to protect her.  When Ravenna threatens to take over the land, one of Freya’s soldiers may be the only hope to keep her wicked ways at bay.  The PG-13 adventure drama is a prequel to Snow White.  The one hour and fifty-four minute film stars Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain and Nick Frost.

An American businessman heads to Saudi Arabia to pitch a hologram to the country’s ruler in A Hologram for the King.  During his trip, he struggles with the cultural differences and gets a new perspective on life.  Tom Hanks, Ben Whishaw, Tom Skerritt and Sarita Choudhury star in the one hour and thirty-seven minute film. The comedic drama is based on Dave Eggers’ 2012 novel.  It’s rated R for sex, nudity, language and drugs.

The circumstances that took place when Rock ‘n’ Roll legend Elvis Presley showed up at the White House in December 1970 is the focus of Elvis & Nixon.  The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll met with President Richard Nixon in the Oval Office and asked if he could become an undercover operative.  The photo that was taken that day became in high demand at the National Archives.  The one hour and twenty-six minute comedy starring Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey is based on real events.  The film is rated R for language.

When a heist goes wrong, a crime boss seeks out the thief who botched the job in Precious Cargo.  To prove her loyalty, the robber commits to stealing rare, expensive jewels and ropes her ex in to helping her.  The limited released action film stars Bruce Willis, Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Claire Forlani.  The one hour and thirty-one minute film is rated R for language, violence and sex.

The highs and lows of jazz musician Nina Simone’s life and career are showcased in Nina.  The Grammy Hall of Famer and activist shined through her music, but her personal battles with depression and alcoholism caused a downward spiral.  With the help of her former assistant turned manager, she makes a play for a comeback.  The unrated biopic stars Zoe Saldana and David Oyelowo.  The drama is playing in limited theaters for one hour and thirty minutes.

A former policeman is released from jail after being framed for a crime in Compadres.  The crime boss that sent him to prison also kidnapped his girlfriend.  With the gangster and the FBI after him, the ex-cop discovers that a young hacker may be the key to keeping him and his girlfriend alive.  The comedic adventure stars Omar Chaparro, Joey Morgan, Eric Roberts and Kevin Pollak.  The unrated film is playing in limited theaters for one hour and forty-one minutes.

Following their father’s death, two brothers find out that they’re actually half-brothers in Men & Chicken.  With this newfound information, they go on a journey in search of their biological father.  During their quest, they discover that they have three other half brothers with similar characteristics.  The unrated, comedic drama is playing in limited theaters for one hour and forty-four minutes.  The Danish film is subtitled in English.

A lot of the new films entering theaters this weekend have comedic undertones.  Next week, the comedies continue with the release of Key & Peele’s Keanu and the star-studded Mother’s Day.
