Beloved characters head back to the big screen this week. Calvin’s neighborhood barbershop gets a change after 12 years. Plus, a Disney classic gets a new look with live action and CGI effects.
A young boy is cared for by a pack of wolves in The Jungle Book. When a tiger threatens to rid the jungle of anything that could be a danger to him, the boy is forced to leave what he’s known his whole life and journey into the unknown. A wise panther and a friendly bear help him on his dangerous voyage. The PG adventure drama is directed by Jon Favreau and stars Neel Sethi. The one hour and forty-five minute film features the voices of Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong'o, Scarlett Johansson, Giancarlo Esposito and Christopher Walken. It’s available in conventional, 3D and IMAX theaters.
Calvin’s hair-cutting crew is back in Barbershop: The Next Cut. This time around, ladies have joined the all-male staff, changing the dynamics of the shop. Over the years, not only has the barbershop changed, but also the neighborhood around it. The group does what they can to try and bring their community back to what it once was. Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer, Regina Hall, Anthony Anderson, Eve, JB Smoove, Lamorne Morris, Sean Patrick Thomas, Deon Cole, Common and Nicki Minaj star in the PG-13 comedy. The film plays for one hour and fifty-two minutes.
A deceased CIA operative and a death row prisoner become one in Criminal. When an agent’s final assignment is left unfinished, authorities look for a way to complete his mission. Scientists place his mind into the body of a man about to be put to death for his crimes in the hopes that he can put an end to a dangerous plot. Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman, Tommy Lee Jones, Alice Eve and Gal Gadot star in the one hour and fifty-three minute action film. The dramatic adventure is rated R for violence and language.
A young woman goes to great lengths to find her love in Colonia. When her husband is kidnapped by Chilean militants, she goes on a mission to get him back. Tracing him to an area in the South, she discovers that the only way she may be able to get to him is to join a cult, from which no one has ever escaped. Emma Watson stars in the romantic drama. The limited released film plays for one hour and fifty minutes.
A struggling punk rock band gets caught in an unexpected, dangerous situation in Green Room. At the end of their show, they accidentally stumble upon a murder scene. When the club owner realizes that they’ve seen what they weren’t supposed to, he traps them backstage so the word won’t get out. The limited released horror film stars Patrick Stewart, Anton Yelchin and Imogen Poots. It runs for one hour and thirty-four minutes and is rated R for violence, language and drugs.
A young man forms a band to try and impress a young lady in Sing Street. The band becomes more than a way to woo the young woman; the teen uses the music to escape his troubled home life and new school drama. The PG-13 musical drama is playing in limited theaters for one hour and forty-six minutes.
Another action-packed film enters the box office race next week. April 22 is the release date for The Huntsman: Winter’s War, as well as the comedy Elvis & Nixon and Tom Hanks’ A Hologram for the King.
