One of the original members of the Beastie Boys, John Berry, passed away on May 19. He was 52.

Berry’s death was confirmed to the Associated Press by his family who said he died around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday morning while at a hospice in Danvers, Massachusetts.

The late musician founded the hip-hop group and came up with its name in the early 1980s. His bandmates included Mike Diamond, Adam Yauch and Kate Schellenbach.

Berry played guitar on the group’s first EP, however, soon after he and Schellenwach left the band and were replaced by Adam Horovitz.

The Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, the same year Yauch died of cancer.
