The new trailer for Woody Allen's upcoming film Café Society has just been unveiled.
As is clear from the footage, Café Society is a period piece following a young man (Jesse Eisenberg) who moves to Hollywood in the 1930's and falls in love, both with a girl (Kristen Stewart) and with the town itself. It's another period piece from Allen after Magic in the Moonlight, which was set in 1928. This also reunites Allen with Eisenberg, who he previously worked with on To Rome with Love.
Also starring in Café Society are Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell, Blake Lively, Anna Camp and Corey Stall. The film is Allen's first collaboration with Amazon Studios, with whom he is developing an upcoming TV series starring Miley Cyrus. Unlike that show, however, Cafe Society will be released in theaters, distributed by Lionsgate.
Café Society recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and reactions among critics have been mixed. The Hollywood Reporter called it "a small fiction of amiable appeal and vibrancy," while Variety called it "one of those Allen films that keeps talking about passion instead of actually making the audience feel it."
The last Woody Allen movie that was almost universally beloved was Blue Jasmine, while since then, Magic in the Moonlight and Irrational Man were both considered to be less significant Allen works.
Café Society opens on July 15.
