On May 27, Band of Skulls released their fourth studio album, By Default, on the BMG record label. The band continues to evolve, creating great rock ‘n’ roll with a wide variety of influences. Each album seems to expand on their previous sound and this album certainly follows that pattern.
The album starts off strong, combining heavy guitar and drums perfectly offset by rock star vocals. The band is known for their harmonies and vocal dissonance and those are certainly present here, especially in songs like “This is My Fix.” Their usual guitar shredding is also evident on sexy “Little Mama.”
While their hefty rock sound shines through, the band also expands into other musical territories. “Back of Beyond” has an ‘80s feel that’s almost Cars-like in places. “Tropical Disease” has an island quality behind its pounding rock. “In Love by Default” is a slow song with a poppy bounce, and bass heavy “Something” blooms from an almost Prince-like verse into a melodious chorus.
The diversity of sound on this record is definitely a highlight, but so is the fact that bass player Emma Richardson is given more time to sparkle with her instrument and beyond. Funky bass work abounds on “Killer” and her vocals stand out on “So Good,” a song that leaves a distinct disco impression.
Band of Skulls is a quintessential rock ‘n’ roll group and they haven’t put out a bad album yet. Their full sound and willingness to experiment make them a force to be reckoned with. Pick up their new album today and experience their newest contribution to the rock world.
