The Box Office has belonged to Disney for the majority of 2016 and Finding Dory is no exception. The film remained number one at the box office for the second weekend in a row, grossing a very impressive $73.2 million. This brings its domestic gross to $286.3 million and it recorded the eighth largest second weekend ever and beat out the $72.6 million which was brought in by Captain America: Civil War.

The new releases of the week struggled to compete. Second place went to the long-awaited sequel Independence Day: Resurgence which brought in a less than expected $41.6 million. The stream of negative reviews didn’t help this film and I feel that it is going to struggle to make $100-110 million domestically reports Box Office Mojo. I think the international box office is the only hope for this film.
Third place went to the buddy comedy Central Intelligence, which brought in a nice $18.2 million and is closing in on $70 million domestically. The Shallows came in at fourth place with a very surprising and better than expected $16.7 million opening weekend. Fifth place went to the other new release of the week, Free State of Jones. It really struggled to find an audience and only grossed $7.6 million.
X-Men: Apocalypse was able to pass $150 million domestically while Zootopia has grossed $340 million domestically during its 115 days in theaters. Disney's successes continue as The Jungle Book has grossed $358 million in just 73 days.
