KONGOS released their new album Egomaniac on June 10 on the Epic record label. The album has an awesome beat from start to finish. It feels even smoother than its predecessor and has a sense of fun that’s hard to overlook.
KONGOS last album, Lunatic, was full of memorable songs, but it seemed to lack smooth transitions. It felt jumpy. With their third album, they seem to have conquered their flow issues. Each song feels like it belongs right where it is and the album is more powerful for it.
As always, KONGOS bring an amazing beat to their music. Even slower songs like “Look at Me” and “Underground” have a pulse that pushes them forward. They have a range of styles on this album running the gamut from cosmic “Where I Belong” and “2 in the Morning” to almost zydeco on “I Want It Free” and “Birds Do It,” and everything keeps you dancing. Because of this range, the album feels playful. They even illustrate that spirit on the comic yet significant “Autocorrect.” The album ends with a bounce on the laid back “If You Could,” leaving you feeling refreshed and ready to listen all over again.
I recommend listening to these songs after a couple of drinks, when you can really get into them. You’ll want to jump up and move or at least bounce in your seat. The album is fun and who doesn’t need more of that in their life?
