There’s a fight for independence at the box office this weekend as Matthew McConaughey and Liam Hemsworth battle it out, one against Confederates, the other against aliens. It’s also double duty for Hemsworth. The Australian actor heads two films debuting this weekend.
Doom looms over the earth once again in Independence Day: Resurgence. Following the previous alien invasion twenty years ago, the countries around the world joined forces to protect their inhabitants from future attacks. They didn’t, however, prepare for the advancement of their enemies. Extraterrestrials threaten to take over once again as Americans celebrate the Fourth of July. The PG-13 sci-fi adventure stars Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox and Judd Hirsch. It’s playing in conventional, 3D and IMAX 3D theaters for two hours.
A small town Mississippi farmer steps up to change the course of history in Free State of Jones. Uniting with other local farmers and slaves, Newt Knight incites a revolt against the Confederacy during the Civil War. The two hour and nineteen minute action drama is based on a true story. It stars Matthew McConaughey, Keri Russell and Gugu Mbatha Raw. The film is rated R for brutal battle scenes and disturbing images.
A lone surfer is stranded within reach of a dangerous great white shark in The Shallows. It’ll take guts and a strong will in order to survive the deadly waters and get safely to shore. Blake Lively stars in the PG-13 thriller. The suspense film runs for one hour and twenty-seven minutes.
A wannabe model moves to the Los Angeles to try to jump start her career in The Neon Demon. She comes in contact with a narcissistic woman consumed with the idea of staying beautiful and will do whatever it takes to stay that way. Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, Keanu Reeves and Christina Hendricks star in the one hour and fifty-seven minute horror film. It’s rated R for violence, nudity, sex and language.
Four groups of people have a connection with one canine in Wiener-Dog. The one hour and thirty minute comedy shows how the dachshund played a major role in the lives of its eccentric owners. The limited-released film stars Danny Devito, Julie Delpy, Kieran Culkin, Ellen Burstyn and Greta Gerwig. It’s rated R for language.
A man trapped on a secluded island finds and befriends a corpse in Swiss Army Man. His newfound dead friend gives him the strength and courage to find his way back home to the love of his life. The one hour and thirty five minute comedic action film stars Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano. The limited released film is rated R for language and sex.
A ranger heads to a mysterious town, headed by a preacher, to solve a string of murders in The Duel. As he digs through the evidence, he finds himself deeply entangled in the case, putting his well-being on the line. Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson star in the limited-released drama. The one hour and fifty minute film is rated R for violence and language.
A troubled kid, on the verge of being sent to another foster home, flees into the New Zealand woods with his foster uncle in Hunt for the Wilderpeople. With authorities around the country on the lookout to find them, the two go on an epic adventure that bonds them even closer. The PG-13 adventure comedy stars Sam Neill and Julian Dennison. The limited-released film runs for one hour and forty-one minutes.
The action continues next week with the releases of The Legend of Tarzan and The Purge: Election Year. Also heading into theaters on July 1 is the family friendly Disney film The BFG.
