On July 22, Relient K’s new album, Air for Free, was released on Mono Vs Stereo. The record has a pleasing pop-rock feel and a positive message for their fans.
From start to finish, this album has a happy tone, which isn’t surprising considering they’re a Christian band. Much of the work is more mainstream than religious, though. “Mrs. Hippopotamuses” is a fun tune about knowing where you came from and being content with it. “Cat” is about loving life. Even “Man” which has a message about growing up and acting your age creates a cheerful mood. The two real Christian pieces on the record are “God” and “Prodigal.” “God” is less obtrusive for fans of other religions focusing mainly on peace and love, while “Prodigal” has a heavier Jesus message closer to the band’s own views.
The album uses a lot of acoustic instrumentation with a few electronic tunes thrown in for good measure.
"Man" has a strong piano line and acoustic guitar which are heavy on "Mountaintop" as well. "Empty House" has sparse instrumentation. The only electronics on that tune are used to alter the voice. Even horns and ukulele make an appearance on "Sleepin’."
Overall, the record is full of the feel-good melodies and lyrics we’ve come to expect from Relient K. However, you’ll also notice that they’re evolving and becoming more grown up, as I expect is most of their fan base. Whether you’re Christian or not, there’s some good music on this album. It’s worth a listen.
