We finally had a new No. 1 movie at the box office this weekend. The Secret Life of Pets opened with a very impressive $103.2 million. It became only the sixth animated film to ever gross over $100 million during its opening weekend.
The Legend of Tarzan swung into second place this weekend with a nice $20.6 million to bring its total domestic gross up to over $80 million. Finding Dory dropped to the third place, still bringing in $20.4 million raising its total domestic gross to $422.6 million. Finding Dory is now the highest-grossing movie of 2016 reports Box Office Mojo.
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates was the other new release of the week and it brought in $16.6 million, about what was expected. I’m predicting this one to maybe eclipse $50 million domestically. I personally saw it over the weekend and thought it was hilarious. The Purge: Election Year rounds out the top five by grossing $11.7 million and passing $50 million domestically.
Central Intelligence finally passed $100 million domestically this past weekend. Independence Day: Resurgence just passed $90 million and I think this will will top out right over $100 million while The Conjuring 2 is just at $100 million domestically after 31 days.
