Star Trek Beyond was the champion of the box office this weekend by grossing $59.6 domestically. This is slightly less than 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, but it is a solid opening that should give the film between $180 to $190 million domestically.

The Secret Life of Pets came in second with a solid third weekend at $29.3 million, raising its total domestic gross to $260.7 million. Ghostbusters saw a 50 percent drop in third place with $21.6 million. The new horror film, Lights Out had a solid opening with $21.6 million reports Box Office Mojo. I predict that next weekend Ghostbusters will pass $100 million domestically.

The third new release Ice Age: Collision Course had a disappointing $21 million opening. This was the weakest opening of the series and I see this film struggling to do well at the box office although the numbers were surprising considering the recent success of animated films this year.

Finding Dory was out of the top five for the first time since being in theaters. It still brought in $7.2 million, raising its gross to over $460 million. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates passed $40 million and Central Intelligence continues to have an impressive run by going past $120 million domestically.
