Yep Roc Records released Look Park’s self-titled debut album on July 22. It’s Chris Collingwood’s first album outside of Fountains of Wayne and it is just as distinctive as anything he did with them. The album is full of quiet rock with a relaxed feel.

The first thing you notice on this album is Collingwood’s voice. As always, it gives his work a unique sound. The next thing you notice is that while the album is pop, it stands out from the crowd of popular artists. The album has older influences. ‘Shout Part 1’ gives a ‘60’s impression and ‘Aeroplane’ has an easy echo and psychedelic tone.

As well as being inimitable, the album is beautiful. ‘Minor is the Lonely Key’ has an old-fashioned instrumentation and a sad sound. It’s immediately followed by the jangly guitar of ‘You Can Come Round If You Want To.’ ‘I’m Gonna Haunt This Place’ has eerie music and lyrics and ‘Get On Home’ leaves the album on a slow song with gorgeous vocals about not running from your problems.

The only song that doesn’t shine is ‘Crash That Piano.’ It comes off as bland and not as original as the rest of the album.

Generally, this is a great album. It has a softer sound with older influences, but it carries them into a distinctive modern day sound. If you’re a fan of Fountains of Wayne, you’re sure to love this too. If you’re just a fan of indie-pop, this is a notable album as well. Whether you stream or buy, you’ll want to give it a listen.
