Two classic tales get a new look on the big screen this weekend. While Steven Spielberg puts his spin on a giant children’s book, Alexander Skarsgård takes on the king of the jungle.
A man who grew up in the Congo becomes assimilated to everyday human life in The Legend of Tarzan. Years later, the now married man is requested by Parliament to go back into the jungle as an ambassador. His trip into the wilderness awakens his animal instincts. Alexander Skarsgård stars in the PG-13 adventure alongside Margot Robbie, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz and Djimon Hounsou. The action film runs in conventional, 3D and IMAX 3D theaters for one hour and forty-nine minutes.
A lonely orphan is whisked away to Giant Country by a Big Friendly Giant in The BFG. With the BFG, the young girl experiences places she never knew existed, including the location where children’s dreams are created. As the bond between the two grows, even bigger evil giants threaten to eat her and the other humans of Earth. BFG and the girl head to London to warn the Queen of the impeding danger. The PG animated adventure is directed by Steven Spielberg and is based on Roald Dahl’s book. Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill, Penelope Wilton, Jemaine Clement, Rebecca Hall and Bill Hader star in the one hour and fifty-seven minute family film.
It’s that time of year again when, for twelve hours, all crimes are legal in The Purge: Election Year. In this installment of the film series, a female senator, who is trying to put a stop to the purge, becomes the main target for those on a mission to kill. A man, who almost committed a crime a few years back, becomes the security guard in charge of keeping her safe. The thriller runs for one hour and forty-five minutes. It’s rated R for violence and language.
A string of bank heists points to a connection with the bank owner in Marauders. As authorities investigate, they discover a more complex plot. Bruce Willis, Christopher Meloni, Adrian Grenier and Jonathan Schaech star in the limited-released action film. The one hour and thirty-seven minute thriller is rated R for violence, language, drugs and nudity.
Children will be begging their parents to take them to theaters this week to see The BFG and also next week for the animated film, The Secret Life of Pets. Meanwhile, starting on July 8, adults looking for R-rated laughs will be heading out to check out Mike and Dave Need Dates.
