Bean Box is a unique subscription service that sends out monthly boxes of four separate sampler coffees or a single 12 oz. bag of the coffee of the month. They all come from 21 of Seattle’s award-winning, small-batch roasters. You may be familiar with Seattle being the coffee capital of the United States. The beans are roasted within 48 hours of shipping and you can definitely taste the care that goes into each batch.
Bean Box offers a personal concierge to help so you always receive coffees that you’ll enjoy. That way they can meet your unique tastes. You can choose from several roasts to begin with. They have light, medium, dark, espresso and decaf, or you can take them all with a variety pack. I decided to try their sampler variety package so you can get a feel for what the service is like.
The bags came in the box shown at the top of this review. It was clearly marked with the company’s name and logo so the excitement started immediately after opening my mailbox. Each bag contains 1.8 oz. of coffee – enough for approximately 8 cups. So you’re getting a total of 7.2 oz. of coffee.
The first two bags in the package were Kuma Coffee’s Ecuador Mario Hervas and Herkimer Coffee’s Drip Blend. Kuma is labeled as fruity and they suggest sipping it poolside. The taste was nicely sweet and though the color of the coffee was light, it had a good flavor. I should make mention that I tried all of these coffees iced, as that’s the only way I drink my caffeine in the summer. I was afraid because of the color of the drink that it would be watered down, but it definitely wasn’t.
Herkimer’s Drip Blend was labeled as being lightly acidic with a clean finish. Bean Box suggested drinking it without cream or sugar and it definitely was delicious on its own. It had a rounded flavor with hints of chocolate. Also included in the box was a wrapped caramel. My fiance said it was tasty.
The last two coffees in the box were Lighthouse Roasters Fine Coffees’ Roaster’s Choice and Conduit Coffee Company’s Costa Rica Hacienda Sonora Catuai Rojo. Roaster’s Choice is a blend of Arabica beans that Bean Box says is a bold roast with a real kick. The beans were really dark with a nice naturally oily sheen. They blended up into a rich black coffee that was delicious with cream.
The Costa Rica coffee was labeled as fragrant and juicy with a full butterscotch body. It was a light-medium roast with a definite sweetness that was almost fruity. Yummy.
All the coffees in this shipment were wonderful. My fiancé and I tend to disagree on roasting depth. He likes light to medium roasts while I enjoy medium to dark and espresso roasts. This box gives us each something we love. It’s a great way to try new coffees that you wouldn’t normally have access to. It would also make the perfect gift for the coffee connoisseur in your life.
If you would like to try Bean Box’s subscription service, click here. The sampler box is $20 per month with discounts for prepaying 6 or 12 months in advance. The coffee of the month club is $20 for one bag a month, $36 for a bag every 2 weeks or $68 for a bag every week. While the price might seem a little high, remember these are from small-batch specialty roasters, which are always more expensive. The flavor is well worth the price.
