Matt Damon returned to the Jason Bourne franchise after almost a decade and his return was able to claim the top spot at the box office. The film brought in $60 million and was the best opening of the franchise only behind 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum which grossed $69.2. I’ve always enjoyed the Bourne films and expect this one to have a very strong domestic performance.
Star Trek Beyond barely took second place after a 50 percent drop by bringing in $24 million and a domestic total grossing of $100 million. I’m predicting the film at least gets to around $150 million domestically which could be seen as a disappointment, especially since a fourth film has already been announced as noted by Box Office Mojo.
Bad Moms finished third this weekend with a solid $23.4 million opening. I see this film finishing just under $100 million domestically. The Secret Life of Pets was in fourth place with $18.1 million and just shy of $300 million domestically. Lights Out rounds out the top five with $10.8 million and continues a solid domestic run.
Ghostbusters passed $100 million domestically, and the other new release, Nerve brought in $15 million after opening last Wednesday. I don’t expect Jason Bourne to hold first place for very long with the highly-anticipated Suicide Squad opening this weekend.
