Kenny Baker, the man inside the iconic R2-D2 robot for Star Wars Episodes I-VI, has passed away at 81 from an illness.

The actor was found Saturday morning by his nephew, according to his niece, Abigail Shield, in a statement to The Guardian. In it, she reflected on her uncle's passing and incredible career.

"It was expected, but it’s sad nonetheless," Shield said. "He had a very long and fulfilled life. He brought lots of happiness to people and we’ll be celebrating the fact that he was well loved throughout the world. We’re all very proud of what he achieved in his lifetime."

Baker was born in Birmingham, England on Aug. 24, 1934. Standing 3 feet 8 inches tall, Baker was told he probably wouldn't live through puberty.  However, he went on to be chosen for the man inside R2-D2. He returned to the role in The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and the Star Wars prequel trilogy. For Star Wars Episode VII, Baker served as a consultant while a new actor was inside the suit. He also appeared in films like Flash Gordon, The Elephant Man, Time Bandits, Amadeus and The Labyrinth.

Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Ewan McGregor and Warwick Davis paid respect to the actor on Twitter.

A couple of other celebrities have also commented on the passing.

Finally, the official Star Wars Twitter posted a pic of the actor in the suit that made him a star.

Rest in peace, Mr. Baker.
