OwlCrate is a subscription service that mails out a monthly box. The box is full of bookish items and a new release, hardcover Young Adult novel following a new theme each month. In the past they have sent jewelry, candles, POP figures, socks, pins and more. This month’s box was themed “Fast Times at YA High” and it was a lot of fun. I’ll go through the items with you and let you know where you can sign up for this great service too!

As usual, everything came packed in an OwlCrate logo box filled with shredded cardboard to keep it all safe. You can see the box at the top of this article. The packaging is cute and gives a fun feel to the experience of finding it in your mailbox.

The first items I pulled from the box were some accessories and an art print to hang on the wall. There were two button pins, a necklace and the drawing.

One pin reads “Hogwarts is my Home” and was created by Taryn Draws. Being a big Harry Potter fan, this button will have a place of honor on my purse. The other pin reads “Chapter Raptor.” It’s adorable and will definitely get some use as well.

The art print is by Susanne Draws and it’s a rendering of Harry Potter, Hermione and Ron in class. Have I mentioned how much I love Harry Potter? This is going in my living room.

The necklace pays homage to Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. I haven’t read the book yet, but it’s been on my to-be-read pile for a while now. Now that I have matching jewelry, I have a higher motivation to get to it. The necklace is made of a cheap brass metal, but the pendant is sturdy and cute. It’s accessorized by a cassette tape charm, which is a reference to something in the book.

Next in the package were a notebook and coloring book. The notebook is labeled a “decomposition” book and it’s made from 100 percent post-consumer waste recycled pages. The lines inside are printed with soy ink and the whole thing is made in the USA. Inside are cute drawings that mimic the usual handy details found in composition notebooks. It’s adorable and I’ll make sure it gets some use.

The coloring book is made by Blue Star Coloring. It was created especially for this OwlCrate box. It’s full of black and white stress-relieving patterns to color. The book is shorter and narrower than a traditional coloring book, but it has just as many pages as usual. The patterns inside are great, most of them requiring a lot of detail work. It’s sure to keep you busy for hours.

Last in the box were the novel and a book related item. The story this month is a contemporary YA novel called P.S. I Like You by Kasie West. It involves a romance started when someone responds to main character, Lily, writing song lyrics on her desk. The story is supposed to be both funny and moving. I look forward to reading it.

The book also came with a signed bookplate. OwlCrate books aren’t signed every month, so it’s always a treat to receive one that is. And, as always, there’s a printed letter from the author to explain the story and why it means something to them.

The book related item in the box is a set of colored pencils with the name of the novel printed on the front. They’re the perfect sidekick to the Blue Star coloring book.

So, altogether this package held seven gifts plus the hardcover novel. The box costs $29.99 plus shipping and they always exceed that in value. Everything they sent to me this month will be used immediately. I love receiving this subscription. It’s always a fun theme and it is full of useful items.

If you’re looking to receive a bit of fun in the mail and you’re a fan of YA literature, this is the box for you. Pop onto their page here and place your order. You can pay monthly or sign up to prepay for three or six months at a bit of a discount.

September’s theme will be “Darkness.” They promise tie-ins to Throne of Glass, Six of Crows, Miss Peregrine's and more. Get it before they sell out!
