In the ever-changing saga of what happened or did not happen on Sunday, Aug. 14, in Rio with Ryan Lochte and three other swimmers, reports now claim that the four U.S. teammates made up the robbery story.
The same day a Brazilian judge ordered Lochte and fellow swimmer Jimmy Feigen not to leave Brazil, their teammates Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz, who also said they were robbed, were taken off a plane in Rio and detained by police. This occurred after Judge Keyla Blank pointed out “inconsistencies” in the athletes’ timeline of events.
According to ABC News, the entire story about being robbed at gunpoint is reportedly a lie the swimmers told only to cover up a fight they had with a security guard at a gas station on the night in question.
On Wednesday, Lochte told NBC News that he and his teammates used the restroom at the gas station and were approached by men with guns as they got back into their taxi. However, a police source claims that "one of the swimmers was seen on CCTV footage breaking down the door to the bathroom at the gas station and fighting with a security guard."
It looks like we’ll have to wait and see if this video surfaces and what it shows. In the meantime, Conger, Bentz and Feigen are all still in Rio de Janeiro. Lochte, however, left the country Tuesday and is now a wanted man in Brazil.
