Animated characters are big on the big screen this week. Parents beware because the animated food film is anything but family friendly. There is something for the kids, however, a new take on a Disney classic about a boy and his dragon.
A 10-year-old boy, lost in the forest for six years, proves the local folklore is true in Pete's Dragon. The boy tells a forest ranger about his best friend, a dragon named Elliot. When others find out about the creature’s existence, they hunt him down with malicious intent. The PG live action film stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence and Robert Redford. The Disney family film plays for one hour and forty-two minutes.
Food finds out what really happens when they’re taken home from the supermarket in Sausage Party. A sausage goes on a mission to spread the word that getting put in the shopping cart could be deadly. The adult-themed animated film features the voices of Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Salma Hayek, Edward Norton, David Krumholtz, Nick Kroll, Michael Cera, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Bill Hader, Anders Holm, Paul Rudd and Danny McBride. The comedy is rated R for sex, language and drugs.
A wealthy, ill woman prepares to sing at Carnegie Hall in Florence Foster Jenkins. The problem is that what she hears is different than what everyone else hears and her husband has never told her the truth about her lack of vocal ability. Determined to take the stage despite her sickness, she finds strength in the power of music. The PG-13 comedic drama is based on the true story. The one hour and fifty minute limited released film stars Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant and Simon Helberg.
A young woman reconnects with her ex-con biological dad in Blood Father. She seeks his protection from a drug cartel out to kill her for murdering one of their own. Her estranged father goes to great lengths to keep her safe. Mel Gibson, Erin Moriarty, William H. Macy, Diego Luna and Michael Parks star in the limited released action film. The one hour and twenty-eight minute adventure is rated R for violence, language and drugs.
Set during the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia in World War II, Anthropoid is based on the real-life plan to execute a high-ranking Nazi official. With a lack of communication and equipment, two soldiers took on the difficult mission that would have a major impact on the war. The limited released thriller stars Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan. The two hour suspense film is rated R for violence.
Brothers, dealing with financial struggles, decide to rob a bank in Hell or High Water. As they target the branches of the bank that took their family’s land, a Texas Ranger, on the verge of retirement, tries to thwart their plans. The drama stars Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine and Ben Foster. The film plays in limited theaters for one hour and forty-two minutes. It’s rated R for violence, language and sex.
The relationship between a young boy and his animal friends seem to be a theme in the new films hitting theaters. This week it was a dragon in Pete’s Dragon and next week it’s a beetle and a monkey in the kid friendly animated film Kubo and the Two Strings. The other films debuting on Aug. 19 are a revamped Ben-Hur and Jonah Hill’s War Dogs.
