It’s an all out war at the box office this weekend. Characters face off against the government, terrorists and even family members in the latest releases. Jonah Hill and Miles Teller bring humor into dangerous situations in their war-based comedic drama.
Two twenty-somethings take on a high powered job for the Pentagon in War Dogs. After landing the multi-million dollar deal, the two realize they may have bitten off more than they can chew. They find themselves ill prepared for the dangerous mission of transporting ammunition to the Afghan military in the unstable war-stricken area. Hill, Teller and Bradley Cooper star in the comedic action film. The one hour and fifty-four minute film is based on real events. It’s rated R for language, drugs and sex.
A young boy takes on a dangerous spirit that has ties to his family’s past in Kubo and the Two Strings. The boy sets out with his magical guitar to find his late father’s armor and destroy the spirit in its path. The PG animated adventure features the voices of Art Parkinson, Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, Ralph Fiennes, George Takei, Rooney Mara and Brenda Vaccaro. The film plays for one hour and forty-two minutes.
Brothers battle it out in the remake of the classic film Ben-Hur. A wealthy man, forced into slavery, seeks revenge on his adopted brother, a Roman soldier, who denounced him for being a traitor and murdered his family. The PG-13 drama runs for two hours and four minutes.
Natalie Portman wrote, directed and stars in A Tale of Love and Darkness. The PG-13 drama is based on the renowned memoir of Amos Oz, who grew up in Jerusalem shortly after World War II as Jerusalem was starting to become its own state. Having to deal with a family tragedy while living in an unstable country at that time of his life helped shape who he is today. The one hour and thirty-seven minute Hebrew-language film is subtitled in English.
A young FBI agent goes on an undercover mission into a white supremacy group in Imperium. The man struggles with his morals and doing his job as he delves deep into the terrorist community. Daniel Radcliffe and Toni Collette star in the limited-released drama based on real events. The thriller runs for one hour and forty-eight minutes.
The birth of the internet and its impact on society is the focus on the documentary Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World. The one hour and thirty-eight minute Werner Herzog directed film shows the impact the World Wide Web has had on technological advances and social interactions. The limited released film is rated PG-13.
More drama unfolds next week with the release of Robert DeNiro’s Hands of Stone. Jason Stathom’s Mechanic sequel, Mechanic: Resurrection and the horror film Don’t Breathe are also entering theaters on Aug. 27.
