My Discount DVD Club is a new Cratejoy subscription company that mails out two DVD movies and edible goodies for less than the price of a movie ticket. Although the subscription service is new, they’ve been working with retailers for years and have built up (and continue to build) a library of over 3,000 titles. They have nine genres to choose from and include candy and popcorn in every box.

While I don’t have kids, my fiancé and I both love children’s movies and my nieces and nephew visit often. So, I decided to try out their Family & Children subscription. Here’s what was inside this month’s box.

Everything came in the box you see above. It was a generic white box with the company’s logos glued to it. While it’s not super fancy, the packaging got everything here in good shape and the savings of not buying special boxes passes on to the consumer.

Inside the package I was pleased to find two bags of Orville Redenbacher popcorn bowls and a couple of handfuls worth of candy. Normally the service just sends one bag of popcorn, but they sent me extra in thanks for paying for two different genres. Such a nice touch.

The candy included were Starburst, Sweet Tarts, Gobstoppers, Laffy Taffy and Nerds. A good variety that my fiancé plowed through in no time, leaving behind only the flavors he didn’t like. It made him a very happy man and I enjoyed what was left.

Next in the box were the movies themselves. I was surprised to find three items instead of two. Co-founder Daniel Schaefer told me that when they buy in bulk, they sometimes get titles with only a couple hundred units left over – such as the Saturday Morning Cartoons set in my box. In that case, they add extras to as many boxes as possible.

I also was surprised to see that one of the films was a Blu-ray/DVD set. Schaefer informed me that they also buy Blu-rays in their bulk purchases and will throw them in whenever possible without extra cost. Anyone who doesn’t have a Blu-ray player can contact them and get additional DVDs and just pass the Blu-ray on to friends. Such an awesome system!

The movies in my package were Diary of a Wimpy Kid (on Blu-ray), Saturday Morning Cartoons 1970s Volume 1 and Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. The Disney movie is a favorite of mine, so I already own it on Blu-ray. However, my best friend didn’t have a copy so I’m passing the DVD on to her family.

The Saturday Morning Cartoons are actually a 2-disc set with over 5 hours’ worth of ‘70s and ‘80s cartoons including Josie and the Pussycats, Yogi Bear, Hong Kong Phooey, The Jetsons and Scooby-Doo, amongst others. I’m dating myself here, but I watched those cartoons growing up, so this set is a lot of fun for me.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid I’ve seen before but didn’t own. It was the favorite of a child I used to babysit and I always liked it. I’m happy to have my own copy and I’m thrilled it’s on Blu-ray.

The owners of this company really go out of their way to add value to their boxes. I got extra popcorn and candy, plus a Blu-ray and an extra movie for the regular club price. I think this is a great club to make sure you have a family movie night each month. Or pick from the grown up genres for a cheap date night in.

When I signed up for the Family & Children genre, I immediately received an email stating they were going to send me a questionnaire to discover which movies would be best for my home. They had various age brackets listed that I was able to pick from. I chose movies for older children and all ages and left the young kids brackets unchecked. I think they did a great job in sending movies that fit my choices.

My Discount DVD Club costs only $8.99 per box, shipping included. That makes it cheaper than any other movie club I’ve seen so far and they really go out of their way to make their customers happy. I would recommend it to anyone who likes being surprised with new movies every month. It makes a great gift for movie lovers and is perfect for family or date night.
