Lit-Cube is a book subscription service that mails out monthly boxes full of novels and book-related items. Each month has a new theme. For September’s box they chose Haunted Hearts and it was curated by author A. G. Howard. This is the first of Lit-Cube’s boxes to be curated by someone other than the owners and it was a rousing success.
This month’s goodies came in the box you see above. Lit-Cube always uses their green logoed boxes so you get excited the moment you open your mailbox. Inside everything is padded and it’s very rare that things don’t arrive in one piece.
The first three items in the package were this month’s novel, the edible and a bar of scented soap. Also pictured is this month’s collectible card with the theme written on it.
With A. G. Howard hosting the box, of course we received her newest novel. The nice thing about Lit-Cube is they aren’t just a young adult box. They send both teen and adult books. This one is a new adult Gothic romance called The Architect of Song. I adore Gothic romances and anything set in the Victorian era, so I devoured this book.
The story is about a deaf girl after the death of her mother. In her grief Juliet steals a distinctive flower off a mysterious grave and finds that with its petals, she can contact a ghost named Hawk. The book follows her and her interactions with a nobleman who turns out to be the ghost’s brother. Can she solve the mystery of Hawk’s death? As she begins to fall for both men, will she choose life or death? Watch for my review of this book later this week.
The edible this month was a packet of hot chocolate. It’s dark chocolate flavored to reflect the dark theme of the box. It was tasty.
The soap smells like Gardenia. It’s a reference to the flowers Juliet and her mother grow together in a greenhouse in the story. The soap arrived cracked in half, but that doesn’t matter. It can still be used. The floral scent is too strong for me though, so I’ll be passing it along to my best friend.
Also in the box were a necklace, a journal and a quill with ink. The necklace has pressed flowers encased in a heavy glass heart. It’s very pretty with its Victorian style, and I’ve worn it a few times since obtaining it. However, I didn’t like the chain. It was a very light, fine ball chain and it was incredibly difficult to clasp shut. I put it on a silver chain I owned instead.
The journal is beautiful. It’s made of a faux leather with gold embossing. The proverb on the front is used in the book and the drawing of the tree goes with it. Inside there are lines to mark dates for use as a diary or datebook. I will definitely find a use for this.
The feather quill is a beautiful shade of purple and it writes nicely. It came with a bottle of black ink to dip it in. Getting the right amount of ink on the pen took a bit of practice, but I managed to write my name in the front of the journal without much trouble.
Overall, I thought this was a really nice box. I liked that it wasn’t a YA novel and loved the Gothic theme. Howard did a great job picking out items that reflected the time period and her book. Lit-Cube continues to be a fantastic subscription for book lovers.
Are you a Beauty and the Beast fan? There’s still a few days left to sign up for the October box whose theme is ‘Tale as Old as Time.’
