Popular books and real life events are the basis of this week’s new releases. Well known celebrities headline the films about fantasy and past and recent history.

The story behind the worst oil spill in American history is told in Deepwater Horizon. Back on April 20, 2010, tragedy struck when the off shore drilling rig Deepwater Horizon burst into flames in the Gulf of Mexico, leaving the many lives in jeopardy. Mark Wahlberg stars in the PG-13 dramatic action film alongside Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Kate Hudson, Dylan O'Brien and Gina Rodriguez. The film runs for one hour and forty-seven minutes.

A young boy straddles the line between reality and fantasy and discovers a hideaway for eccentric children with unusual abilities in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. As he learns about this mysterious place and its dwellers, he becomes their protector from the evil that threatens their existence. The PG-13 fantasy film is directed by Tim Burton and is based on Ransom Rigg’s novel of the same name. The two hour and seven minute adventure stars Samuel L. Jackson, Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Chris O'Dowd, Allison Janney, Rupert Everett and Judi Dench.

An armored truck driver is convinced by his coworker to take part in a lucrative heist in Masterminds.  After successfully nabbing millions in cash, he discovers that his accomplices are making him the fall guy, putting a huge target on his back. Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis and Leslie Jones star in the comedic action film based on real events. It plays for one hour and thirty-five minutes.

There’s a legal battle over the existence of the Holocaust in Denial. The PG-13 drama is based on Deborah E. Lipstadt’s book and real events, when Lipstadt was taken to British court by David Irving, a man she claimed denied the events of the Holocaust took place.  Under English law, Lipstadt had to prove that the heinous murders happened in order to win the case.  The limited released drama stars Rachel Weisz and Tom Wilkinson. It runs for one hour and fifty minutes.

More books are heading to the big screen next week with the film release of Paula Hawkins’ bestselling novel, The Girl on the Train and James Patterson’s children’s book Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life.
