Mason Summit released the first single off of his new album, entitled “Gunpowder Tracks.” Here, the 19-year-old demonstrates a poetic sensibility.
Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Mason Summit released the first single off his new album on Aug. 26. A busy artist, Summit hit the ground running at the age of 13. Since then, the now 19-year old has already released two solo albums and one duo record. This new project will make the third in four years.
“Gunpowder Tracks” is a pared-down and relatable tune. With no real introduction or outro, listeners feel as though they have entered mid-conversation. An effective technique in this instance, it adds to a genuine sense about the song. With no pageantry or overproduction, Summit gets right to the heart of the matter.
The entirety of “Gunpowder Tracks” is comprised of only a guitar and Summit’s vocals. The lyrics, though simple, denote someone of more advanced years than this young artist. Additionally, they contain a distinct folk undercurrent.
Though the subdued “Gunpowder Tracks” does not necessarily highlight Summit’s technical vocal capabilities, it does positively represent the artistry of this singer/songwriter. Listeners will be inclined to check out his complete album – also entitled Gunpowder Tracks – after hearing this initial single.
