The films hitting theaters this week bring scares, laughs and edge-of-the-seat suspense. Among the new releases are sequels to hit Tom Cruise and Tyler Perry films; Jack Reacher & Madea are back on the big screen in all new adventures.
Madea is called upon to watch over a group of teens on Halloween in Boo! A Madea Halloween. Hilarity ensues as Madea tries to keep tabs on the high schoolers while being chased by slayers, evil spirits and zombies. Tyler Perry wrote, directed and stars in the PG-13 comedic horror film. It plays for one hour and forty-three minutes.
Jack Reacher takes on the government in the sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. When the woman in charge of his former unit is unfairly imprisoned for treason, Reacher retaliates to set things straight and exposes a plot strategized by corrupt government officials. Tom Cruise and Cobie Smulders star in the PG-13 adventure. The action film runs for one hour and fifty-eight minutes.
A teenage girl goes missing after being accused of bombing a local post office in American Pastoral. Determined to find his daughter, a father goes on a mission to get her back and faces the harsh realities of the 1960's political and social unrest. The one hour and forty-eight minute drama is based on Philip Roth’s novel of the same name and stars Ewan McGregor, Jennifer Connelly, Dakota Fanning and Uzo Aduba. The limited released film is rated R for sex, language and violence.
The daughter of a woman pretending to be a medium actually becomes possessed by evil in Ouija: Origin of Evil. The scam artist must face the spirits that she pretended to summon if she ever wants to get her daughter back. The PG-13 horror sequel runs for one hour and thirty-nine minutes.
A lawyer is tasked with representing his friend’s son, who's accused of murdering his father, in The Whole Truth. As the case evolves, he begins the question the validity of the young man’s confession. Family secrets are exposed and the truth behind the murder is revealed. The one hour and thirty-three minute thriller stars Keanu Reeves, Renée Zellweger, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Gabriel Basso and Jim Belushi. The limited released suspense film is rated R for language, violence and sex.
A couple becomes jealous of their new neighbors in Keeping Up With the Joneses. As they learn more about them, they start to become suspicious about who they really are. During their investigation, they find out that the two are actually secret agents. The PG-13 comedy stars Zach Galifianakis, Jon Hamm, Isla Fisher and Gal Gadot. It plays for one hour and forty-five minutes.
Killers come out to play in 31. In the limited released horror film, carnival workers are abducted and forced to play a dangerous game that could leave them dead. Rob Zombie’s latest thriller runs for one hour and forty-two minutes. It’s rated R for violence, language, sex and drugs.
A servant conspires with a con artist to steal her employer’s inheritance in The Handmaiden. The two hour and twenty-four minute romantic drama is based on Sarah Waters’ novel Fingersmith. The unrated film is available in limited theaters.
Dramas, thrillers and crime films made up most of this week’s new releases. Next week’s Inferno starring Tom Hanks and Felicity Jones can be categorized by all three.
