Blawan debuted new alias, Kilner, on his upcoming album Walk Type. The first hyper-industrial single from the record, “Auto Wave,” is now available.
The British DJ/producer commonly known as Blawan, has taken a new alias for his upcoming album Walk Type. The now Berlin-based artist is expected to drop the record on Nov. 28. The first single from the six-track EP is now available under the artist’s assumed name, Kilner. Entitled “Auto Wave,” this piece veers an extra step off the beaten path and into an experimental zone. Though Blawan has been slowly migrating in this direction for some time, it seems Kilner is willing to really take the plunge.
The track begins with what sounds like a ball bouncing relatively quickly on a sprung floor. An oscillating tone begins to weave in, with an unfinished almost static edge. Over the course of the first minute and a half, additional light percussion begins to layer over the top. Though somewhat sparse by comparison to most techno work, this industrial and gritty track is captivating from the start.
As “Auto Wave” continues onward, some classically industrial sounds enter, creating both depth and a sense of abstraction. Kilner’s dynamic here evoke a dark and hyper-industrialized reality. At times, it almost sounds like whispers or breath into a mic are added to the tapestry. At others, the track feels totally devoid of humanity. However, there is a perpetual danceable beat underneath it all – acting as a solid through line and anchor for those less experimentally inclined.
When “Auto Wave” resolves itself, listeners find themselves back where they started. Rather than feeling like a full-circle experience, it is as though the audience dove into something and then receded away from it. This is a strong first track from Kilner and audiences will be glad to hear more in a few days.
