Read Dog runs a unique subscription service that mails you a book curated just for you, plus other little treasures based around a monthly theme. They take the time to get to know their customers through an in-depth questionnaire and a dedicated Facebook page exclusively for their readers. Everyone receives a different book based on their answers. I decided to try them out and see how well they really know their readers. I was delighted with the results.
The shipment was packed in this cute logo box. I adore custom boxes. They make the experience much more fun and exciting.
Inside the box, everything was packed in pretty navy blue shredded cardboard. The color matched this month’s theme, Winter Night Sky, which was a nice touch. In addition to the cardboard, the book selection was wrapped in blue tissue paper to keep it safe.
At the top of the package were a couple different crafts, a letter from the company’s owners and a beautiful picture of a night sky. The included craft materials were a small package of yarn with a crochet hook and some strips of paper to make origami stars. Instead of written instructions, there was a paper insert that gave links to website tutorials for each activity. Both were easy to follow and fun to do. I may be including paper stars as a personal touch in Christmas gifts this year and I can create a crocheted bookmark just for me.
The picture of the night sky is on heavyweight paper. It’s pretty enough that I might frame it and hang it each year during the holidays. The letter from the owners is basically a thank you to their customers inviting them to participate in the Facebook community and wishing them a wonderful holiday season. It’s nice that they put their gratitude in writing.
Under the paperwork were several goodies, including the book. I received three bags of tea, perfect for relaxing on cold nights, several types of stars, a bookmark and a Read Dog sticker. The tea is Twinings, always yummy, and the Winter Spice was especially good. The bookmark has a night sky background and a quote from Neil Gaiman, a favorite author of mine.
Interspersed with all the goodies were silver confetti stars, several plastic glow-in-the-dark stars and some teeny-tiny dried starfish. Truthfully, I’m not really sure what to do with the starfish. My décor is never beach themed, so they won’t get much use here. However, I know some people love to decorate with similar items, so they’re an interesting addition.
Like many teenagers, I used to have glowing star stickers in my bedroom. I used to hang them in constellation configurations of my loved ones’ sun signs as a way to have them close to me while I slept. I love that Read Dog added the sturdy plastic versions to their box. It brings back memories and I plan on hanging them above my bed.
Last in the box was the book they chose just for me. How did they do? They picked a book that I’ve been wanting to read since it came out, but hadn’t gotten around to buying yet. Amazing! Makes me pleased that they gave me the chance to really open up about my reading habits in the questionnaire because their choice was perfect.
What would happen if they sent me something I’d already read? Read Dog will actually let you return books that you already have on your shelves for a replacement pick. This is unheard of in any other subscription box. They really want their customers to be happy. This is why they’re worth the full $31.99 per month, even if the items inside don’t reach that total. You get your very own book curator and some fun extras.
