The Weekend Getaway Band is an Atlanta-based septet who recently released Here Tonight. Their Motown-R&B-Jazz combination is an enjoyable listen.
The Weekend Getaway Band is an Atlanta-based septet. Their sound is comprised of vocals, percussion, keys, guitar, bass and a horn section. The result is a combination of R&B, Motown and Jazz with an occasional hint of Big Band. Though these gentlemen perform a number of covers live, every track on Here Tonight is original work by the Weekend Getaway Band.
Here Tonight opens with the title track. A sweeping romantic tune, this was clearly made for dancing under the stars. This song seems as though it has stepped out of another time. Yet, a thoroughly modern feeling guitar solo in the middle grounds it in the present. This is a solid opening track from Weekend Getaway Band. Although, it strikes listeners as something to move to – as opposed to stopping to listen to.
Next up on this record is “Love Of My Life.” This song rings stylistically of a ‘50s ballad. Unfortunately, this track is less inspiring or attention grabbing than “Here Tonight.” However, the following track, entitled “Huggin’ and Squeezin',” recaptures listener attention. Representing a strong combination of catchy and soulful, it is impossible not to move to this song. The arrangement on “Huggin’ and Squeezin’” is very strong, with a greater emphasis on a deep groove. This is a real highlight on the record.
Mixed bag with Weekend Getaway Band
As Here Tonight continues, there are a range of songs, styles and levels of execution present. Tracks such as the mellow “Your Love” tend to blend into the background a bit too easily. “See You Smile” shows great promise. However, listeners are left feeling that it would be better live.
On the other side of the coin are tracks such as “Let’s Shag on the Beach (Live).” This is a fun and engaging tune – which also lets listeners know these gentlemen do not take themselves overly seriously. Possibly the most effective track on this record is “The Carolina Swing.” A happy tune, it contains an appealing depth and dynamic in arrangement. “Carolina Swing” inspires singing and dancing in audiences, with strong vocals leading the way.
Here Tonight closes with “Having a Good Time (Live).” With a toe-tapping rhythm and danceable beat, this represents a solid ending to the album. All in all, this is a strong effort from Weekend Getaway Band. Though it seems they deliver an experience best heard live, this album is an enjoyable listen.
