Fantasy adventures and true stories come to life on the big screen this weekend with a new Marvel movie and an animated troll movie taking viewers on a 3D and IMAX experience.
A tragic car accident leaves a neurosurgeon paralyzed at the hands in Dr. Strange. Looking for any means to get the use of his hands back, he is forced to go the unconventional route and heads to the little known magical land of Kamar-Taj. There, he harnesses special powers and is faced with the dilemma of saving the world with his newfound abilities or returning to the affluent life he once lived. The PG-13 Marvel sci-fi adventure stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams and Tilda Swinton. The Marvel film is playing in conventional, 3D and IMAX theaters for one hour and fifty-five minutes.
A happy village of trolls is thrust into chaos when an evil giant attacks and takes most of its inhabitants in Trolls. A joyful, overly optimistic queen and a very pessimistic troll join forces to get her companions back. The unlikely team must figure out how to work out their differences as they embark on an adventure of a lifetime. The PG animated comedy features the voices of Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, Russell Brand, James Corden, Gwen Stefani, Zooey Deschanel, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Quvenzhané Wallis, John Cleese, Kunal Nayyar and Icona Pop. The DreamWorks family film is playing in conventional, 3D and IMAX 3D theaters for one hour and thirty-two minutes.
A man, with a dream of being a doctor, becomes an army medic during World War II in Hacksaw Ridge. His strong belief in non-violence sets him apart from the rest of the battalion. Determined not to kill, he does the unthinkable and goes to the front lines unarmed, extracting and saving the wounded. The two hour and eleven minute docu-drama is based on the true story of Congressional Medal of Honor winner Desmond Doss. The action film is directed by Mel Gibson and stars Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington and Vince Vaughn. It’s rated R for graphic war violence.
An interracial married couple, living in Virginia in the late 1950’s, struggles with prejudice in their everyday lives in Loving. The place they called their home becomes the next one to turn their back on them. The pair is taken to court and sent to jail because of their love for one another. The PG-13 film is based on the true love story of Richard and Mildred Loving and their 1967 Supreme Court case Loving vs. Virginia. The two hour and three minute biopic stars Joel Edgerton, Ruth Negga and Michael Shannon. The drama is currently available in limited theaters and expands to wide release on Nov. 11.
A lonely farmer, who intentionally separated himself from his family, is the subject of Peter and the Farm. The one hour and thirty-one minute documentary follows the Vermont man as he tends to his crops and animals while battling alcoholism. The unrated film is available in limited theaters.
This week’s new film, Dr. Strange, brought sci-fi to the big screen and there’s more sci-fi to come on Nov. 11 with the release of Arrival starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker. Adding some comedy into the mix next week is Almost Christmas.
