Drake's song may have been called "One Dance," but it got way more than just one play on Spotify.

The Toronto born rapper's lead single off of his quadruple platinum album Views recently became the first single to exceed 1 billion plays on Spotify.  In total, the song had more than 4.7 billion plays.  "One Dance" already had the title of most played song on Spotify, passing Major Lazer, DJ Snake and MØ's "Lean On," in October.

According to Vibe, the song reached this milestone even though it didn't have the aid of a music video. Sound engineer Matika Music hinted at a video for the song on Instagram in June, but it never came to fruition.

"It's a phenomenal record, that's where it starts. It's just one of those rare records that translates throughout the world," Spotify's global head of creator services Troy Carter told Billboard. Carter also said Drake's popularity as a streaming artist stems partly from how he releases content.

"Drake doesn't lock himself into an album cycle. When Drake wants to put out music and he feels like it's ready, Drake puts out music...I think he really has captured that rhythm of how fans want to consume music," Carter said.

With 2016 coming to a close and this new accomplishment under his belt, Drake appears to be stepping into 2017 as the big man on the music campus. The rapper was recently nominated for eight Grammy Awards including Album of the Year for Views.
