Imagine one of those rooms in Febreze commercials. The mess, the smell, layered in dust - basically everything you can imagine a tween room looks and smells like. Multiply that by two, one with asthma and a black belt, the other a budding actress taking musical theatre classes, then add a fat, furry cat - welcome to my kids' rooms.

When the RayCop RS2 was offered for review I had to try it. There was no way any machine could fix the ungodly smell of tween athlete AND kill germs AND remove dust from fabric without an industrial size washing machine.

The purifier, which is shaped like a stingray, is a bit daunting - my overactive imagination had me worried the UV light would burn something - especially my eyes. Of course, the light shuts off as soon as you lift it and has UV blocking technology so you're not randomly spraying UV light all over. Yeah, I rolled my eyes at myself too.

The system works through a combination of UV sterilization, vibration, suction and filtration. Basically, to super-simplify it, it's like a oversized dustbuster, just quieter and a lot more suction.

I started in the living room on the couch blanket used for family cuddle time, plus cat.  When complete I first did a filter check - OMG that was on my blanket. Then came the sniff test. Gentle sniff first, confusion, then a deeper intake. Nothing. There was no scent. I yelled to my husband with excitement.

I then did the area rug and both couches. The room smelled like just after a full spring cleaning - in 20 minutes.

How can this be? The technology was designed and developed in 2005 by a physician, Dr. Sungjin Lee, to provide effective relief for allergy and asthma patients. It's patented technology sanitizes fabrics like a dishwasher cleans dishes - without the water or drying time. It's HEPA filter captures 99.9% of common allergens like dust, pollen and mold; UV light deactivates the DNA in dust mites, bed bugs, bacteria, viruses, mold and mildew.

Oh, and I did use it after the rug was vacuumed the night before - the ick still there is exactly why RAYCOP works. It combats the potentially harmful microorganisms that you can’t see. And, really gross fact, RAYCOP not only helps to eliminate dust mite matter, but also captures the carcasses and droppings they leave behind.

The RS2 has multiple settings, I used the medium strength on the blanket and couches, high on the rug. There is a light setting for delicate fabrics.

The most interesting part of this product is that RAYCOP handles everything about the purifiers start to finish and beyond. So from research and manufacturing to distribution, sales and support, it's all done in house. Because they pioneered the technology, they take pride in the final product, making sure each one is up to the highest standards. They even post the phone number to call them on the customer service page - who does that anymore?

With a price point of $350 you may figure you will just run out for some more Febreze. But as much as I love my Febreze, this fall we did not have a single seasonal asthma flare up. The RAYCOP works. Pollen, dust, dust mite carcusses, the lot, gone and my daughter able to breathe and not miss a day of school because of asthma in 7 years. Who can put a price tag on that?
