The Icarus Account is comprised of Ty and Trey Turner. These brothers release their eighth album, Over The Moon, on June 21. Both play guitar and piano, in addition to singing. The Florida-based singer-songwriter duo has an acoustic pop sound, with hints of folk sensibilities. The beginning and end of Over The Moon are strong, though these gentlemen seem to lose their power in the middle.

Cherry Street” opens the record in a sweet and upbeat manner. With rhythms good for swaying and toe tapping, this tune has a folk undertone. There is something Jason Mraz-esque about “Cherry Street,” which causes listeners to smile.

If “Cherry Street” was the start of a relationship, “Chicago” is its sorrowful ending. Though a solid track with strong instrumentation and lyrics, there is a slight disconnect. Somehow the subject matter and associated emotion stops just shy of really coming through. Listeners wonder if it might be more powerful in person.

“Only You” feels like a pop-R&B hybrid, with weight to the orchestration and smooth edges on the vocals. The emotion here is more acutely translated through the vocal performance. String work on this track is strong, adding greatly to the dynamic composition.

The following few tracks on Over The Moon fall a bit flat. Though there is nothing blatantly wrong about them, each fades into the background and out of memory with regrettable ease. The Turner brothers hit their stride once again in “Postcards.” This song contains an effective combination of lyrical imagery, accessible rhythms and relatable emotion.

“Oceans Between Us” picks up where “Postcards” left off, building even more momentums. A sense of urgency marks the performance in an attention-grabbing way. Both of the final two tracks – “Tennessee Sky” and “Settled” – are relatable and somber yet strong performances.

The Icarus Account’s Over The Moon is hit or miss at times. However, it is clear that these brothers know how to play, how to sing and can often tell open hearted stories with their lyrics. Audiences will look forward to checking out what the future holds for Ty and Trey Turner.
