The Force continues to be strong with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as it easily repeated as box office champ with an impressive second weekend gross of $96.1 million and currently stands at $286.4 million domestically after only 10 days. This film will definitely cross $300 million domestically in the next few days and I think has a very good chance to finish in the top five of the highest grossing movies of 2016.
The only mid-week release to find some success was the animated comedy Sing. The film had an impressive $76.7 opening during its first five days of release. This continues the trend of very successful animated films being released this year (Finding Dory, Zootopia, The Secret Life of Pets), reports Variety.
Passengers came in third place with a modest opening of $30.4 over the first five days and hopes that fans of Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt will help the film’s audience continue to grow over the coming weeks.
Assassin’s Creed, the film based on the widely popular video game also struggled to find an audience. It has brought in $22.5 million throughout its first weekend and hopes to also find an audience in the coming weeks.
The holiday comedy Why Him? brought in a respectable $16.7 million and I predict will end its domestic run around the $50-60 million range.
Moana dropped out of the top five with all the new releases but still brought in over $10.5 million and now stands over $180 million domestically.
Oscar contenders La La Land and Fences both finished in the top 10. Fences brought in $6.7 million while La La Land brought in $5.7 million as both films get prepared for awards season.
We have no wide releases this weekend with it being the end of the year so it is a safe bet to say that Rogue One will remain box office champion as we prepare for 2017.
