On Dec. 13, Warner Bros. released the extended cut of the D.C. Comics hit Suicide Squad on Blu-ray and DVD. The movie brings further life to the love story of Harley Quinn and Joker while still delivering humor-laden punches of action.

Suicide Squad tells the story of an elite band of criminals brought together to fight against an invincible enemy for the government. Kept in line by soldiers and the threat of death, our anti-heroes strike out across the city fighting supernatural creatures to save society and gain a bit of freedom. As the story moves along, we learn a bit more about the criminals’ pasts, especially Harley Quinn and Deadshot, making us see their human sides.

D.C. movies are always fun. They’re dark and funny and full of action and Suicide Squad is no different. What is different is seeing the villains as the heroes and feeling emotional over their backstory. The extended scenes in the Blu-ray edition give us a fuller view of Harley Quinn’s madness and love for a killer. We might glimpse the woman she could have been if Joker had never come along, but who doesn’t want a lover that would go to extremes to keep them? We can see the crazy, but we love their dynamic.

Overall, I give this movie 4 stars. It doesn’t have the depth of Shakespearean drama, but it’s exciting and entertaining making it the perfect pick for movie night. If you enjoy watching the villains win or are a fan of the D.C. Comics world, this is an excellent choice.
