Songstress Mariah Carey performed at this year's Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest, and the results were...interesting.
Carey's set started out alright with the singer standing in the center of a circle of feathers singing a verse from the traditional New Year's song "Auld Lang Syne."
Then, it all went downhill. As Carey launched into the first full song of her set, "Emotions," an alleged technical malfunction caused her to stop singing. Carey claimed that they hadn't done a proper soundcheck prior to her performance. "We can't hear," she said to the audience of over 1 million people who had clamored to Times Square to watch the ball drop. "We didn't have a check for this one so we'll just say it went to No. 1 and that's what it is."
As her dancers tried to carry the performance, Mimi seemed to haphazardly attempt to do her own choreography, letting the track play and singing very little throughout the rest of the number.
"That was....AMAZING," Carey remarked to the audience as the song came to a close.
Things seemed to improve moderately as she began her second song "We Belong Together," off her 2006 album The Emancipation of Mimi. After making a (still haphazard) attempt to lip sync, she seemed to give up however, and once again let the pre-recorded track play on as she meandered around the stage. "It just don't get any better," she said at the end of the performance before exiting the stage.
After the performance, Carey posted a tweet that seemed to acknowledge the less than stellar performance.
"Sh*t happens," she said with a sad face emoji. " Have a happy and healthy New Year everybody! Here's to making more headlines in 2017."
We're sure you will, Mariah. We're sure you will.
