On Jan. 1, Lake Union Publishing released Nancy Star’s newest novel, Sisters One, Two, Three. This family saga is full of heart and heartbreak, a family torn apart and pieced back together, for a satisfying read.

When Ginger’s rebellious teenage daughter overhears a family secret on vacation, Ginger is forced to spill the truth. Her family was ripped to pieces when she and her siblings were children. When her brother died, her sister Callie left and never came home again, her sister Mimi kept so busy she couldn’t think, Ginger became so obsessed with avoiding risk that it damaged relationships with those she holds dear and none of them ever spoke of it again in the fear that it would destroy their mother. When their mom passes away and Callie reappears, they’ll have to piece together what really happened on that fateful day and see if they can fix the cracks in their family foundation.

Every woman in this book has flaws and they all seem utterly human. While a couple of plot points felt a little forced, such as Callie wanting to swim in the Cut, the story still managed to stay emotional and compelling. Each sister had changed for the better by the end and, at least for me, the plot twist wasn’t predictable.

This book would make a great book club selection. It’s women’s lit at its finest. If you enjoy a good family saga or a story of mended tragedy, give Sisters One, Two, Three a try.
