Split continues its run as the box office champion with only a 34 percent drop during its second weekend. The film brought in $26.3 million and is closing in on $80 million domestically. The film has been successful in finding an audience and it looks that this film will give M. Night Shyamalan his fifth film to gross $100 million domestically. The last film of his to do this was 2010’s The Last Airbender reports Box Office Mojo.
A Dog’s Purpose came in second place with #18.4 million. The film had a solid opening despite some of the controversy surrounding the film before its release. Hidden Figures remained in third place with $14 million and grossed $100 million domestically. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter finished in fourth place with $13.9 million. This is the smallest opening for any film in the Resident Evil franchise.
La La Land rounds out the top five as the heavy Oscar favorite continues to see an increased audience. The film saw a 43 percent increase this week as it brought in $12.1 million and has now grossed $106.5 million domestically after 52 days. xXx: The Return of Xander Cage fell to sixth place with $8.3 million as the film has passed $30 million domestically.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story finished in eighth place with $5.1 million and has crossed $520 million domestically. The other new wide release of the week Gold, starring Matthew McConaughey finished in tenth with a weak $3.5 million and will likely not return to the top ten after this week.
Next week’s openings include the third film in The Ring franchise. It will be interesting to see if Rings can dethrone Split from the top spot at the box office.
