M. Night Shyamalan’s new thriller Split dominated the box office with a very impressive $40.2 million opening weekend. This is the fourth largest January opening of all-time. This opening weekend was much more impressive than Shyamalan’s last film The Visit which had a $25.4 million opening back in 2015 reports Box Office Mojo.

Second place went to xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. The film brought in $20.2 million, which is far short of the $44.5 million opening the original grossed back in 2002. I expect this film to reach around $70 million domestically. Hidden Figures dropped to third place with $16.3 million and has crossed $80 million domestically.

Sing came in fourth place with $9 million and is sitting just under $250 million domestically. Oscar favorite La La Land rounds out the top five with $8.4 million and is about to pass $90 million domestically.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story came in sixth place with $7 million and has grossed $512.2 million domestically after 38 days. The Founder jumps into the top ten at ninth place with $3.8 million.

Split has a chance to repeat as box office champion as we have three new releases coming to theaters next week including the final installment of the Resident Evil franchise.
